Career Profile: Morven

Morven, a mechanical engineering student, has completed two summer internships with Schlumberger—the first was in the Stonehouse Technology Center in the UK, and the second in Norway. Her internships have lasted between 12 and 14 weeks.

“For my first internship I was part of a sustaining team that developed directional drilling tools and technologies. My main project involved analyzing a flow loop pumping system used for testing tools before they are shipped. I also created an interactive spreadsheet for field use to validate testing. The spreadsheet is still being used in various field locations today.

"While working in the UK I also had the opportunity to socialize with the other interns and full-time employees. Often there were activities planned such as meals, drinks, and sporting events. Towards the end of my internship I also had the opportunity to attend an Interns’ Day with all the other UK interns—which was a really good experience!

“My second internship focused on developing sand management technologies. I was responsible for characterizing the flow of high rate gas wells. I used theoretical fluid dynamics, a computational fluid dynamics program, and practical testing to establish how the tools performed in high rate gas conditions. A large part of this project was to design and set up a test rig. This required me to work with several teams with expertise in workshop tasks, production, and supply chain. I was able to apply the theoretical knowledge I gained at university, while developing my communication and organizational skills.

"I thoroughly enjoyed both of my internships. I have met people from all over the world, made some great friends, and had the opportunity to do interesting projects that have made a useful contribution to the industry. I will definitely be considering a career at Schlumberger.”
