Career Profile: Kelly

“Engineering was what I wanted to do once I left school and I decided that an apprenticeship scheme would be better for me than university. I wanted to get into the working world and learn that way. The practical, hands-on side of the apprenticeship, the work experience and the wide range of qualifications it offers appealed strongly to me.

“At college, I completed my NC and HNC in Mechanical Engineering, with units that included; maths, statics, dynamics and thermofluids. I also completed my SVQ Level 2 in Process Engineering Maintenance, Mechanical Discipline Skills and other courses.

“I’ve been with Schlumberger for about a month now, based in Aberdeen’s Oilphase Product Centre, the center of excellence for the design, manufacture and support of Reservoir Fluid Sampling equipment. So far, I’ve been working on sample bottles – stripping and inspecting them, helping set up pressure tests, redressing and packing bottles to be sent back. Working directly on the tools and equipment makes it easier to learn. And everything I’m learning will be of a huge benefit to me, especially when it comes to looking for a job.

“After my apprenticeship, I’d like to get some offshore experience. That’s one of the main reasons why I was drawn to the oil industry – it’s so different to any other working environment. I’d also like to get a degree, probably in Mechanical Engineering. But I’m convinced that an apprenticeship gives me the best start I could have in the industry.

“So far, my impression of Schlumberger has been excellent. No-one I spoke to before starting here had a bad word to say about the company. It has a brilliant reputation and I can definitely see why.”
