Career Profile: Roberta
“For me, an internship with Schlumberger was a prestigious opportunity. All the employees who I encountered enjoyed their work as Schlumberger places high importance on empowering its employees through quality training and the ability for advancement within the company. The process for moving forward in a given career path is very clear.
"My expectation in taking this internship was to get a true sense of what it would be like working in the industry. I wanted to know firsthand how different the lifestyle in the fields is, in terms of difficulty, exertion, hours, meals and camaraderie. To me, experiencing the field first hand is the only way to know how effectively I could manage it. The first time I went into the field, I was able to shadow a cement engineer. I became familiar with the necessity of upper body strength as I learned how to rig up and rig down. The day was long but the amount I learned exceeded what I would have learned in a day at school.
"My internship exceeded my expectation. I was fortunate to experience more than the segment I had been assigned. I saw firsthand how an engineer fits into each of the segments I visited i.e. the district laboratory, pressure pumping and wireline. Everyone I came in contact with was willing to answer any questions I had or explain the task at hand. The crews I was assigned to readily explained the workings of the equipment they were using."
