Meet Taha, Procurement Specialist

Taha began his association with Schlumberger in 2008 as an intern in the Calgary Supply Chain group. In 2010, he joined the company full time as a Procurement Specialist, assisting with vendor and contract management, negotiation, and bidding. Just one short year later, Taha moved to Nisku, Alberta, to take up a role as Procurement Specialist for three different business lines.

What does a Procurement Specialist do?
A Procurement Specialist is responsible for obtaining goods and services required by the operations team—from the initial request all the way through to supplier payment. And everything must be handled according to the highest standards for ethics and quality. I ensure the product or service meets the client’s requirements and the financial books are accurate. This is achieved through efficient order management.

What happens in a typical day in your job?
A typical day consists of a liaising with the operations team, communicating with suppliers, managing orders, building strategies to improve the purchasing process, and creating visibility for our clients. It also includes communications with the rest of the Schlumberger Supply Chain group—sharing product information to create leverage and discussing quality and compliance issues.

Has the training you’ve received at Schlumberger met your expectations?
Schlumberger’s extensive training programs provide employees with all the tools they need to succeed in their jobs. Training has given me an understanding of all the areas within the Supply Chain organization, which has been extremely useful in dealing with the daily challenges I face. So far, I’ve completed training modules in market analysis, functional and cost analysis, sourcing and purchasing strategies, financial and supplier management, and legal affairs.

What has been the highlight of your career with Schlumberger so far, and what do you enjoy most about your job?
It’s hard to pick just one. It’s been very rewarding to gain the confidence and trust of clients with whom I’d had no prior involvement and to enhance the image of procurement by adding value in the purchasing process. I’ve also coauthored a procurement procedure that provides a solid foundation of the global procurement process. Interacting with suppliers and clients on a daily basis, meeting different people and sharing their experiences in life—that makes this job very exciting and enjoyable.

What opportunities does Schlumberger provide for career development?
There are numerous growth opportunities within the Supply Chain organization, especially since it’s developing so rapidly. I could work in procurement, sourcing, logistics, materials management, contracts, or even facilities management.

What advice do you have for someone considering a Schlumberger career in the Supply Chain function?
Supply Chain offers an exciting career path with many opportunities. To excel, you need excellent communication, negotiation, and multitasking skills. You’ll have responsibility for multiple projects at the same time, so the ability to prioritize and complete the work in a timely manner is essential.
