Career Profile: Haitao

There's no better way to test your limits than by stretching them.

In August 2003, Haitao was asked to lead the development of software to support EcoScope*, a new Schlumberger tool that provides data about hydrocarbon reservoirs while drilling in real-time. The deadline was June 2004.

"It was the first time that I had led a team, and I didn't have enough experience to estimate how much work would be involved," says Haitao, who joined Schlumberger in 2002 with a master's degree in computer science from Peking University. "After two or three weeks, I knew it was going to be much more difficult than I had thought."

But with the support and encouragement of his managers, Haitao's team put in long hours and overcame numerous challenges to complete the project—just two weeks late. The software, named EcoView*, received very positive reviews from beta testers.

"A couple of years, I moved over to research. I learned quite a lot in my previous job, and I believe I can add real value to future technology."
