Career Profile: Olga
Can you briefly describe your career to date?
“I joined Schlumberger as a geophysicist and have been involved in a wide variety of projects interpreting client data, working in Russia, the UK, Italy and Algeria. My current role is based in the UK and involves regional interpretation, prospectivity evaluation, and modelling and depth imaging for the data processing center.”
What attracted you to Schlumberger, and why did you decide to join us?
“The innovative technology and the high level of professionalism here—for me, it’s my dream place to work.”
What do you enjoy most about working for Schlumberger?
“I have been encouraged and supported in my career progression over the years. I know what is expected of me and am adaptable and ready for any challenge! One of the aspects of my job that I love the most is that I know I am making a valuable contribution to my team. And I think this is made easier because of the high level of openness, communication and knowledge sharing that is encouraged here, both within my team and across the company via online technical communities.”
What is the training like at Schlumberger?
“I joined Schlumberger as a mid-career so although I didn’t experience the fixed-step training program, I have had access to a range of training courses to develop my professional and personal skills throughout my time here. I also work regularly with, and mentor, junior people and so it’s obvious from their knowledge and capability that the quality of Schlumberger training is very high.”
What opportunities are there for you to progress in your career?
“There are a large number of opportunities within Schlumberger for career development, including training courses—either at your own location, online, or at one of the Schlumberger learning centers. You can also undertake short-term assignments at other locations and of course you can mentor younger, less experienced employees. Every year, you discuss your career development plan with your manager, what your ambitions are, what roles interest you, etc., and then you agree on your objectives for the next 12 months.
Really, it is a career without boundaries. A lot is required of you but if you’re willing to give it your all, you can go as far as you want to go.”
What types of challenges do you face in your job?
“For me, as a Russian speaker, it is the English language and culture. I am UK based, so this is a big challenge. It’s been a really valuable experience for me though and I believe I have become a more confident and self-reliant individual.”
What is the working environment like?
“It’s a great work environment: friendly but professional. Working in a team with people who have such a high level of expertise is a big privilege for me.”
Think back to when you first started…what will you never forget?
“I was very impressed with the focus on safety and environmental issues. This is one of the huge differences between Schlumberger and other service companies.”
