Taking Career Aspirations to the Next Level in Indonesia

An essay competition for female engineering students launched to encourage participation in the Women and Technology in Indonesia event received over 600 entries. Participants were challenged to explain in less than 350 words what attracted them to a career in the oil and gas industry and how they planned to prepare themselves.

Entries were judged on the content quality, creativity, originality and uniqueness; and 48 students were selected to attend the 2-day event which took place earlier this year at the Santika Hotel, Cikarang, Indonesia.

Following lunch, students discussed career preparation tips—from how to make the most of their strengths and weaknesses to understanding the job market, writing the perfect CV and preparing for job interviews.

Later in the day. external keynote speakers, Schlumberger managers and experienced female field engineers—all influential Indonesian women from technology and engineering disciplines—attended a Gala Dinner. This provided a chance for the students to discuss the challenges facing women in engineering, their own career aspirations and the opportunities open to them.

Students spent the second day at the Schlumberger Integrated Base in Cikarang meeting female Schlumberger engineers and discovering first-hand what they could expect from a career in the oil and gas industry.

Ronny Hendrawan, Indonesia Geomarket OFS Manager, says, “There was stiff competition to attend this event and I’d like to congratulate all students who participated. Special recognition must also go to the top three essay entries who were announced at the Gala Dinner. This is a really valuable way of preparing students for a career in our industry but also for us as a company to demonstrate how we mentor and develop our employees. Feedback after the event confirmed its success with almost 100% of students saying they were inspired to join Schlumberger as their company of choice.”
