Meet Jose Luis, Project Manager
Degree: Master’s degree, petroleum engineering
Institute: University of Bucharest
Start Date: 2007
“I know I made the right decision in joining a company of professionals who interact like a real family at all levels.”
Before joining Schlumberger, Jose Luis had acquired 30 years of drilling experience and held positions in both engineering and management.
Why did you decide to move to Schlumberger midway through your career?
I was looking for different opportunities in my personal life and at work, and Schlumberger has a worldwide reputation as a prestigious service company. Because of the experience I have, Schlumberger offered me the professional environment I was looking for plus the incentive and benefits to improve my quality of life and ensure the stability of my family. Now, after several years of working here, I know I made the right decision in joining a company of professionals who interact like a real family at all levels.
What was it like to switch companies? Did you have to relocate?
From the beginning of the recruitment process, I was given constant support for all the complicated steps, such as completing contracts and visas and finding housing. During those first days I thought, “it seems like these guys really want me to work with them!” And this has absolutely been confirmed.
Relocation was made as easy as possible by people at all levels--everyone provided the support to make it go smoothly. Since I joined Schlumberger, I’ve worked in two very different countries, and I can see that company procedures are the same worldwide. I haven’t seen any fundamental differences in working in one place or another, which makes moving around and settling down easier. In my opinion, there’s no reason for anyone to be at all concerned about the relocation process.
Has Schlumberger offered you interesting opportunities or projects that you didn’t have in your previous company?
Absolutely! Schlumberger projects span the oilfield service business. It’s true that my previous experience was a door-opener, but I’ve participated in operations that I would never have imagined being involved with before joining the company. The range of projects is huge, and there are always new technical and operational challenges to chase, depending almost exclusively on attitude and professional abilities.
What has been the highlight of your career with Schlumberger so far, and what do you enjoy most about your job?
The respect I have felt since day one and the sincere recognition for a job well done are the most important. What I’ve enjoyed most is working in this incredible multicultural environment. On one of my assignments, I had 40 people representing 17 different nationalities reporting to me, and we all worked together as if we’d been friends for years! Working for Schlumberger enables you to meet people from each corner of the world and become tied together by Schlumberger’s philosophy of mutual respect and friendship.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career move to Schlumberger?
Don’t hesitate in coming onboard, not even for a second. The horizon for engineers from all backgrounds, and at all points in their careers, is incredibly promising. I see this every day. If there is one thing I regret, it’s that I didn’t have the opportunity to join this company 38 years ago! But I’m glad I’m able to experience it now, even in the latter period of my professional life. Believe me, it really is something I am proud of.
