Diversity, Dynamism, and Celebrating Women in Technology

Women in Technology

Diversity has played a major role in the development of Schlumberger and for nearly 25 years gender balance has been a major focus for us. This year marks 40 years since we hired our first female Field Engineer Trainee (FET). Bonnie Kay joined us in January 1978 in the USA. After several months’ initial training she spent time working offshore before accepting an international assignment in Indonesia. By the end of 1979, 29 women engineers worked at Schlumberger.

Fast forward to 2018 and Bonnie Kay’s experience is still typical of the field engineer life today. Training, travel, challenge, and adventure are as relevant now as they ever were.

While aspects of the role are similar, much has changed in the last four decades. In addition to improved safety and living conditions for those in the field, the pioneering spirit of our people has driven technology development and innovation at an unprecedented pace. Currently, around 19% of our employees are female, with women now well established in senior leadership positions across the company.

The diversity of our workforce is an important part of the company’s cultural philosophy and a business imperative. Diversity brings a plethora of ideas and perspectives, that make the workplace more dynamic and interesting for our people, and provides the company with a competitive advantage. Today, diversity at Schlumberger runs through every job level, including the top levels of management.

Making diversity a priority has given us access to the best people, no matter where they were born, or their background. The Schlumberger culture is a dynamic one that is also a source of innovation and adaptability due to our diverse workforce.

We invite you to gain an insight into the careers and personal adventures of just a few of the successful women in Schlumberger.
