SLB's Research Center based in Cambridge is part of SLB global network of research and engineering centres. Our research center is a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with state-of-the-art research and computing facilities.  We work on applied research projects in the physical sciences to meet the current and future challenges of the industry.

SLB's Research Center based in Cambridge is a distinctive marquee-like structure dominating the High Cross site on the western outskirts of Cambridge, England. This spectacular building was completed in 1985 and the smaller second phase was opened in 1992. It has recently been classified as a Grade II listed building. Altogether, there are more than 930 m2; of laboratory space and offices for more than 100 scientists, technicians and domain experts.


Job Summary:

SLB’s research laboratory in Cambridge is located two miles from the city centre, close to the majority of the physical science departments of Cambridge University. The laboratory hosts a number of interns; these young scientists make a valuable contribution to our research and it is our intention that they receive a superior training experience that increases their scientific and general professional skills.

We have one internship vacancy within the ‘Energy Storage’ group, in the area of battery characterization. The project will involve electrochemistry investigations of battery performance and use of a range of analytical techniques, such as Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope – energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), for characterization of new and aged battery components. The work will primarily be experimental and lab-based, carrying out experiments as well as performing the analysis and interpretation of the experimental data. You will work within a team of scientists as an integrated part of the team working on an on-going research project. 

The position would be suitable for those interested in applications of chemistry and material science in battery technologies.


Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Planning and carrying out experimental work, ensuring that laboratories activities are in keeping within Health & Safety standards and guidelines
  • Analysing and interpreting experimental datasets
  • Participating in regular meetings to discuss project progress
  • Writing technical reports and presenting to peers
  • Assisting with the laboratory housekeeping



  • Good communication skills
  • Good fundamental laboratory skills
  • Basic data analysis (e.g., Excel)



  • Studying towards a Bachelors or Masters in chemistry, materials or related field.
