Description

Borehole images acquired while or after drilling are a paramount tool for interpreting a subsurface reservoir and take important decisions regarding production. Such images are acquired in various physical domains (electrical, acoustic…) which most often complement themselves in terms of the information they provide to the interpreter.  This internship focuses on the characterization of fractures in the image. These cracks naturally present in some hydrocarbon reservoirs act as drains or barriers for the fluids in place. Their characterization is key to build accurate reservoir models and ensure proper well completion.

 

Possible Responsibilities and Duties

The candidate will be exposed to Schlumberger advanced measurements, innovative fracture interpretation workflows, and to the development of numerical models with a state-of-the-art simulation software package (COMSOL Multiphysics).  At the heart of a multidisciplinary team (physicists, geology experts, software engineers, data scientists), you will build up on previous work to design an innovative workflow for fracture characterization from borehole images.  You will contribute to one or several of the following building blocks:

  • Design finite element models and simulate during acquisition (in water-base mud) the response of an electrical tool to fractures of different geometries that have not been properly studied until now:
    • large aperture fractures (> 1mm), 
    • various fracture orientations relative to the well, 
    • interactions between fractures,
    • partial traces vs full traces, etc.
  • Improve interpretation workflows for the quantification of fractures in borehole images in a well-established reservoir characterization platform of the industry (Techlog) 

Deliverables: code (python), numerical models, Internship presentation and report.

 

Target Disciplines and Special Skills

  • Penultimate or final year of MSc in Scientific Computing, Physics, Mathematical Modeling, or similar Engineering degree
  • Knowledge in image processing, data science, finite-element simulations, electromagnetics
  • Proficiency in Python programming and algorithmics development
  • Oral and written English communication skills
  • Good motivation, autonomy, teamwork, and ingenuity
  • Knowledge in geology is a plus
