Scope of the internship:

Schlumberger is helping clients to drill wells more efficiently and providing them with more complete understanding of the formation fluids. One of the main tasks of Schlumberger when monitoring drilling operation is reservoir evaluation of the drilled formation. Composition analysis of the recovered light hydrocarbons (C1-C5) are measured through different analytical methods such as: gas chromatography (GC), mass spectrometry (MS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Furthermore, stable carbon isotopic analysis of initially methane (pioneered by Schlumberger), followed by ethane and propane, in mud gas while drilling became important formation evaluation tools. So far δ13C2 and δ13C3 capability belonged to competition via off-shelf lab-grade equipment.   The Analytical Measurement Group is working on new automated solutions for fluid typing and characterization based on compact gas sensors and infrared spectroscopy techniques to enable adequate for the rig-site and for client needs data spec of C1-C2-C3 isotopes.   The main goal of the position will be orientated into evaluation of an optical prototype to measure carbon isotopes (δ13C1, δ13C2 and δ13C3) in natural gas mixtures and to evaluate its metrological performances. This isotope measurement is based on an emerging technology: hollow waveguide gas cell combined with a quantum cascade laser spectrometer.  

Responsibilities:

 

  • Realization of metrology tests for an infrared isotopic analyser (concentration, linearity)  Integration of optical components on an optical bench
  • Management of thermal and heat effects on the analyser performance
  • Write test procedures and internship report

 

Skills required:

  • Master’s degree, specialty: physics, chemistry, chemical engineering
  • Knowledge in programming languages: MATLAB, Python, or LabVIEW
  • Strong background in chemistry or physics.
  • Excellent analytical capabilities in the laboratory
  • Good motivation, independence, and ingenuity
