Job Description:

The Big Data Engineer works on innovative application of emerging software technologies, and thrives in a semi-autonomous environment where fast prototyping of emerging technologies to meet new challenges is the rule. Successful Big Data Architects are analytical thinkers who have good architecture design skills and clean code programming practices, and have experience from product development and build processes. They have a strong understanding of business strategy as well as good communication and presentation skills. They function well independently and in a team.

Schlumberger Software Technology and Innovation Center (STIC) is dedicated to the digital transformation of Schlumberger products and services through innovative application of software technology. Uniquely positioned in the heart of Silicon Valley at Menlo Park, California, STIC is only a short drive from major players in the software industry and a few blocks from Stanford University. STIC collaborates closely with Schlumberger technology centers, and with leading software industry partners and universities, to jointly develop software technology strategies to support the Schlumberger business and customers.

The Big Data Engineer will be part of the Schlumberger Software Technology organization, responsible for the Schlumberger digital technology initiatives. As the oil and gas industry’s leading supplier of technology, integrated project management, and information solutions to customers’ worldwide, Schlumberger digital technology development and management plays a key role in driving the oilfield service industry’s digital technology transformation.
 

Responsibilities:

  • Work across multiple cross-functional teams in high visibility roles to prototype end-to-end data solutions
  • Architect, design and develop new micro service based systems and tools to enable users to consume and understand data faster
  • Coordinate design and integrity among system elements as they are being developed; recognize when interface impacts might occur and taking early action to avoid problems
  • Proven ability to work cross functionally to deliver appropriate resolution of technical, procedural and operational issues
  • Participate in all major architecture and design decisions that affect the systems produced in the business domains
  • Keep abreast of the tools, techniques and components being used in the industry through research and applies this knowledge to the system(s) being developed

Qualifications & Experience

  • BSc in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology and 4+ years experience.
  • MSc in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology and 2+ years experience.
  • PhD in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology
  • Hands-on experience in building scalable data pipelines in large heterogeneous environments and/or at multi-terabyte scale using Dataflow, Dataproc, Dataprep, Spark, Kafka, etc. and NoSQL/SQL based systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in process improvement, normalization/de-normalization, data extraction, data cleansing, data manipulation
  • Confident to code in several programming languages (Java, Python, Go, C#, etc.)
  • Experience developing web services designs and software desired
  • Practical experience with API development desired (swagger, Apigee, Tibco, CA Technologies, etc.)
  • Understanding of and experience with machine learning concepts desired
  • Candidates must be able to legally work and reside in the US, without sponsorship
