Connecting on the global stage

Beatriz was thinking big when she chose a career in network engineering. At Schlumberger, the globe awaits.

While Beatriz was finishing her studies in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering at the Catholic University of Colombia in 2010, she accepted an internship with the Schlumberger software team. Since her ambition was to work with information networks, she was thrilled to discover the full scope of the company. As networks go, she was now working with one of the biggest: a global company with expertise in more than 120 countries and a commitment to best-in-class technology in every location.

When the internship finished, she continued as a contractor for six years, providing infrastructure services and gaining experience in various technologies and projects, including one she particularly enjoyed: providing 3D visualization rooms in which clients can view and interpret seismic data in vivid, colorful detail on giant displays.

“What better company than a global company to be a network engineer, managing connectivity for more than 80,000 employees in remote locations, offices, offshore, even on the road—it’s the job I had wanted since university.”

In 2016, she was hired full time to provide networking services. “What better company than a global company to be a network engineer, managing connectivity for more than 80,000 employees in remote locations, offices, offshore, even on the road—it’s the job I had wanted since university.”

Each day offers a different challenge, such as deploying network infrastructure for new sites and designing how they will be connected and which devices will be used. The emergence of automation in the industry is introducing a new era of solutions to learn and deploy.

During her early career Beatriz was often the only the woman on her team. “Working with men has been a good experience and I have not felt any difference in my progression. Now there are more women on the team, and I continue to feel confident.”

Beatriz has discovered many capabilities in herself through her work. Perseverance, for one: “With every project, even if it looks impossible, I am always the optimist, trying my best to do everything I can until it is achieved. And teamwork skills: “I was not aware before that I like being a collaborator. On my team I am always trying to involve everyone to feel comfortable. That way not only do my colleagues feel confident but it also creates a very nice place to work.”
