Meet Rozanna, Senior Construction Designer

Can you briefly describe your career to date?

Upon completing my degree in Architectural Design, I began my career in an international architectural firm in the UK. When I joined Schlumberger seven years into my career, at that point I was back in Malaysia. From commercial and high end residential design to Schlumberger, my career as an architect flipped 360 degrees! Nothing is quite the same elsewhere compared to what we need to design for Schlumberger. The big base, the offices, the labs, training centres and the list goes on. Most of it is unique for Schlumberger. I’ve never looked back since.

What attracted you to Schlumberger and why did you decide to join us?

One of the best things about working at Schlumberger is diversity in all aspects. As part of a global team, we get to engage with not just one country, not just one region, but the whole world. That alone is very attractive to me, the opportunity to connect with diverse groups of people and cultures is not something you can find in just any company.

What types of challenges do you face in your job?

Engineering —and construction in general—was once a male dominated profession, it probably still is. From university to work, from office to site, the male/female ratio is not balanced. But that makes the job all the more interesting to get into, to learn from and see what’s the limit, or if there is even any? I don’t necessarily see it as a challenge, I see it as more of a situation that needs to be managed and definitely can be managed, since I’ve chosen this path.

What’s the working environment like?

The team’s dynamic is amazing. I don’t know whether we’ve been lucky, or if we just know how to attract the right people all the time. Synergy, collaboration and most importantly trust, we have them all. Teamwork. Endurance. Happiness. Those are three words that describe my experience at Schlumberger. It’s satisfying to tell my family and friends “I designed that.”

What advice would you give to someone considering a career at Schlumberger?

Go for it. Even when you think it has got nothing to do with your current projects, role or job. Grab the opportunity. Keep on learning! At first, coming from a purely architectural background that had nothing to do with the energy sector, I didn’t realize that I would be able to quickly learn and gain a fair amount of understanding about the industry. Every time Schlumberger acquires a new business, we will learn about it as we need to design spaces for them. So the learning process never stops.
