Exploring technical innovation and managerial talents

Sharon is first and foremost a technical professional, but her SLB career path has allowed her to explore her managerial talents as well.

Starting out in 2002 as a geophysicist in Trinidad, she was charged with setting up and running a seismic data center dedicated to BP Trinidad. She then moved to Houston and worked on developing new technology for seismic imaging. In 2012, Sharon joined—and was soon managing—the Seismic Guided Drilling Imaging team, working to create an integrated earth model that provides real-time, while-drilling updates to data such as 3D velocity models and pore pressure volumes. In 2017, Sharon became a product champion, developing next generation seismic solutions. Today, she is Global Operations Integrity Manager, responsible for excellence in execution of Geosolutions projects worldwide.

Despite Sharon’s managerial success, there’s no taking the science out of the scientist. Looking back, she is most excited talking about the innovative work of a key software project. “It was about rebuilding a seismic processing system from scratch.” in line with our digital transformation.

The evidence suggests that Sharon has not let much get in the way of her success, least of all gender. “The industry is still male dominated, so learning how to assert yourself and be heard can be challenging.” The upsides are well worth it, she says. “SLB offers a lot of diversity and inclusion. The opportunities are many. You have the ability to be a part of international assignments, charitable events, and so much more. A career is not all about the work. It’s about molding yourself into a professional with a very diversified skill set.”

Sharon’s final tip for anyone considering a jump into the energy industry—especially young women? “Be strong and brave. Don’t give yourself any limitations.”
