Schlumberger Careers

Stephanie likes being effective. Here, her peers depend on her for fast results.

Thinking back over her eight years at Schlumberger, Stephanie says all of her managers have helped her progress in her career one way or another. But the best managers, she says, have led by example. “I appreciate their dedication and their commitment to excel.”

Stephanie strives to apply the same commitment to her work as an Electrical Engineer. Hired while completing a Masters degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the National University of Singapore, Stephanie joined the Well Services Singapore Pressure Pumping Center where she worked on electrical system design for remote controlled cementing equipment. Several projects and reliability tests later, she is now Senior Electrical Engineer at the center, leading new product development and providing technical support for field operations.

Stephanie praises the technical training she’s received, but it’s the on-the-job training that she found absolutely essential. “I gained a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses, and it allowed me to develop a problem-solving mindset and a service oriented attitude, which are critical in my daily work.” Part of Stephanie’s daily job is to provide solutions to problems experienced by users in the field. Their queries are usually urgent, so she has to turn around answers quickly. “It is critical to develop and practice an effective problem solving process, from defining the problem, to gathering and analyzing information, laying out possible scenarios and making decisions on the way forward. I have to stay focused on the user’s requirements and try to think from their perspective, so I can communicate in effectively and provide a solution that is tailored to their needs.”

“I gained a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses, and it allowed me to develop a problem-solving mindset and a service oriented attitude, which are critical in my daily work.”

An avid traveller, Stephanie found one of the greatest attractions of Schlumberger was the diversity of the people. Her training experiences have allowed her to meet friends and colleagues from many different countries, functions and backgrounds. “Such diversity brings together many different perspectives. I value that in this company.”

Stephanie says her greatest motivators are delivering results and making things happen, but another motivating aspect of her job is the positive feedback she receives. “I always feel a sense of achievement when I receive a note of appreciation or a positive comment from a customer or from the users in the field about the products and services that we provide. Some of the best moments of my career so far have been the big ‘high fives’ with my colleagues as we complete an important product development milestone.”

Stephanie’s best advice for new recruits? “Keep an open mind. Be ready to embrace changes and challenges. Do not be afraid to challenge yourself by taking on more responsibilities. The learning curve will be deep and the journey will be fulfilling.”
