M-I SWACO’s Applied Engineering Laboratory (AEL) provides testing equipment and services, performs engineering studies, and develops technical models for internal and external customers on drilling and completion fluids. The current focus is automation and connectivity of current and future equipment to increase HMTC fluid laboratories throughput and scalability. Additionally, AEL develops new test methods and equipment to support Fluids NPD and sustaining efforts.


Under limited supervision, Engineer recommends appropriate designs, materials, and/or techniques to develop solutions.  Solutions can be in the form of test equipment and services, and/or performing engineering studies to develop results and/or technical models.  In addition, Engineer will be called on to design, develop, maintain, and/or modify a variety of electro-mechanical apparatus including High Temperature / High Pressure equipment.  Engineer receives specifications and design constraints from project manager, supervisor etc., and assists development teams, performs and reports on testing, repairs and/or recommends/executes changes in procedures and equipment. Reviews progress with appropriate personnel.  Handles special projects as assigned.


Successful candidate will have proven electro-mechanical abilities in applying sound engineering principles in developing and performing test processes (equipment and procedures), engineering analysis and technical model development, and design/modification, automation, repair, and maintenance of existing equipment.  Candidate will have familiarity with general-use sensors and measurement techniques (pressure, temperature etc.), low voltage analog and digital circuits, data acquisition / automation / communication, general machine and fabrication shop processes, and laboratory methods.  Projects require a high degree of mechanical, electronic and computer aptitude and innovation.




  • Provide sound engineering solutions to technical challenges in a timely manner.
  • Design, construct, modify, deliver and maintain innovative specialized-fluid and drilling engineering test equipment involving pressure vessels, automated computerized data acquisition and control systems, and mechanical/electrical components. 
  • Keep management informed on projects and assignments.
  • Present findings to direct and upper management, customers and industry groups as required.
  • Cooperate with and utilize other company departments in providing assistance and support on projects and assignments.
  • Maintain, modify and repair equipment as required.
  • Maintain calibration of Applied Engineering Laboratory equipment and measurement standards
  • Promote, participate and comply with the QHSE Integrated Management System and corporate QHSE policies.



  • Bachelor of Science or higher Degree in engineering or engineering technology, preferably electrical or mechanical.  Will also consider chemical and petroleum disciplines.  
  • Three or more years of practical work experience in a hands-on design, research or operational engineering capacity.  Oilfield experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated excellent practical mechanical and computer skills relevant to job description
  • Practical primary work experience in design, research or operational engineering capacity - oilfield a plus esp. if knowledge is drilling or completion fluids lab equipment related.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD or other similar software with ability to read and produce engineering drawings, layouts and schematics (electrical and mechanical) for modeling, documentation, and outside fabrication. Ability to go from concept, through analysis, to shop drawings, and documentation/archival.
  • Experience working in or with a machine shop or fabrication facility with abilities to design and communicate with machine, fabrication, assembly shops. Abilities to make own parts is a plus.
  • Ability to design, fabricate and document low voltage circuits including common analog/digital controls, sensors, and transducers.
  • Excellent proven hands-on lab-based mechanical, physical property measurement, and computerized data-acquisition skills. Preferably LabVIEW or similar data acquisition experience related to automation of oilfield laboratory equipment. VBA scripting ability a plus.
  • Working knowledge of computer programming related to data acquisition systems with knowledge of porting digital data to network or storage-based archival systems.
  • Fluency in English (spoken/written) with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good to excellent skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word etc)
  • Ability to work in both team and individual situations. Ability to foster good working relationships with internal and external customers
  • Detail-oriented with appreciation for deadlines. Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a multi-task, fast-paced environment. Must be self-directed and able to prioritize goals and responsibilities.
  • Must possess good presentation and organizational skills.
