Modeling and Simulation Engineer

The Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Engineer is part of a multidisciplinary product & process development team, or as a specialized analyst, responsible for developing and maintaining new or improved physics-based models and simulation techniques. The Modeling and Simulation Engineer develops virtual prototypes of new products & processes, optimizes and validates designs using computational tools.


Responsibilities:

  • Define a strategy/ plan to develop M&S software for the new energy ventures to accelerate internal optimization and industry-wide commercialization.
  • Assess periodically the ventures’ technologies to identify M&S needs, as well as research commercial M&S software platforms to select the best fit for various applications or assist with decision-making to invest in development of proprietary M&S platform(s) if needed.
  • Define the M&S architecture for the ventures’ products as well as complex & dynamic processes from system level through element level.
  • Liaise with the New Energy & Digital teams to collaborate on synergies. This includes defining and optimizing systems level architecture for data, automation and controls.
  • Use modeling to help understand the performance of existing and proposed processes and designs, and to interpret the data from experiments
  • Analyze, design, develop and maintain products & processes and assist in their commercialization.
  • Scope new or improved products, evaluate feasibility, and help specify the engineering product. Estimate the development, validation and documentation effort in cooperation with the Project Manager or Project Lead.
  • Integrate, analyze and evaluate system, subsystem and element design and analysis. Develop and apply modeling and simulation technologies to specific needs of the project.
  • Conduct research and provide recommendations for development, evaluation and verification of modeling efforts and criteria.
  • Specify, develop, validate and maintain science-based models of systems, subsystems and elements.
  • Validate and improve the robustness and performance of products through modeling and simulation. Help implement, test and sustain the product.
  • Define testing procedures for models, algorithms, workflows and products. Conduct and coordinate tests, document results and make presentations to project teams and customers. Provide timely corrective actions on defects.
  • Investigate and propose new development areas in the Modeling and Simulation Engineering domains. Keep abreast of novel technical concepts and markets. Adopt new practices as appropriate.
  • Create and maintain project documentation.
  • Participate in technical reviews and audits of projects, including requirements, specifications, designs, algorithms, codes, qualification and test results, and other artifacts.
  • Contribute technical content for product documentation and training material. Provide training and support to customers and field representatives.
  • Provide advanced methodology and algorithmic support for commercial products and services, in particular as InTouch subject matter expert.
  • Make presentations to technical and management audiences.
  • Contribute to design standards and support best practices and design re-use.
  • Organize internal seminars and participate in industry forums, conferences and associations related to modeling and simulation. Author technical reports, papers, articles and presentations.
  • Contribute to innovation activities and university relationships. Author patent and trade secret memos.
  • Share expertise via Eureka and special interest groups. Build an informal network throughout the organization. Mentor others as required.
  • Maintain familiarity with company technology, organization and business.
  • Comply with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements as defined in the risk control matrix.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Solid background in applied mathematics/ physics/ chemistry/ computing and experience (> 5 years) in M&S.
  • Expert in numerical & computational methods of FEA, CFD, flowsheets including fluids with complex chemistries, multiphase flows, kinetics & thermodynamics.
  • Comprehensive understanding of product design & development process, PFD, P&ID, design codes (API, ASME, etc.), design optimization.
  • Experience in steady state as well as dynamic M&S for energy/ chemical process/ production facilities, operation, sensitivity analysis and optimization is a strong plus.
  • Understanding of techno-economic assessment and experience with economic modeling.
  • Hands-on experience with multiple M&S software packages: Aspen Plus/ Hysys, OLI, gPROMS etc.
  • Candidates must be able to work and reside in the US, without sponsorship
