Internship - Embedded strain gauge on/inside PWB for PWA Prognostic Health Management (5-6 months)

Scope of the internship:

 

Prognostic Health Management (PHM) is a maintenance policy aimed at predicting the occurrence of a failure an electronic board and consequently minimizing unexpected downtimes of a tool on the field. Increasing companies develop physic of failure models to predict the occurrence or the probability of failure. Those models are based on classic solder fatigue approaches that seem to do not capture all the risks because only shear strain is taken in account. At Schlumberger, our experience shows strong indication that mixed-mode stresses are key drivers to obtain good convergence between prediction and occurrence of failures. Objective of this internship is to develop a strain gauge embedded on the board to measure all the components of the stresses seen by the board from manufacturing or in the field.

 

Responsibilities:

 

The deliverables will be:

  • State of art on strain gauge construction/physics and application in electronics for PHM
  • Concept Proposals:

1. Standard strain gauge to be implemented on a board

              2. Embedded strain gauge on external Cu layers of PWB (electrical design, schematics, fabrication process)

  • Design and manufacture a Test Vehicle with  2 Copper layers that will be etched to form the strain gauge
  • Validation tests: under thermal cycling, thermal storage and fatigue mechanical bending, and shocks with electrical monitoring.

 

The student will learn on project management, communication and coordination across different functions including material science, supply chain and manufacturing.

 

 

Skills required:

 

  • Have skills in electrical design and signal analysis
  • Show interest in technical experimentation
  • Studying towards a Masters in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Fluent in French and English
  • Knowledge or Major in physics of sensors would be a plus
