Formation Damage Scientist

slb M-I Technical Center in Houston (HMTC) is seeking a Formation Damage Scientist. The successful candidate will join a team of geologists, chemists, and engineers in our Formation Damage and Stability Lab.

Location: Houston, TX


The Formation damage Scientist is expected to provide quality ideas and contributions to assigned projects. The roles include:

  • Analysis and characterizations of formation/reservoir rock samples
  • Designing and conducting laboratory tests to evaluate interactions between rocks and drilling & completion fluids, stimulation products, via HTHP return permeability testing and shale-fluid interaction testing
  • Interpreting testing results and recommending fluid or treatment improvements
  • Providing technical support in formation damage, shale-fluid interactions, wellbore stability, and drilling fluid designs to Schlumberger global operations


As a Formation Damage Scientist, he/she will assume responsibilities for a specific phase of a technical support, research, or development project and ascertain methods for finding solutions to certain problems and perform these procedures. The responsibilities include

  • Analyzing and characterizing core samples by using thin section, analysis, SEM, XRF/XRD and other analytical techniques
  • Designing testing procedures
  • Preparing core plugs for testing, e.g., cutting core samples, measuring routine gas properties, centrifuging cores, etc.
  • Performing return permeability testing and shale-fluid interaction testing and interpreting results
  • Preparing reports for assigned projects
  • Presenting results to clients and customers
  • Calibrating and maintaining laboratory equipment in proper condition
  • Maintaining chemical inventory and ensure any consumable lab supplies are in inventory
  • Carrying out research and development assignments pertaining to formation damage and wellbore stability; attending conferences and symposiums, etc. to maintain professional competence
  • Complying with Schlumberger quality, health, safety, and environmental policies.


  • B.S. degree or higher in geology, petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, or related degree with minimum 3 years of experience. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in performing return permeability testing on drilling fluid and completion fluids is a plus.
  • Knowledge/experience in fluid/rock interactions is a plus.
  • Experience in performing core analysis, such as thin section analysis, SEM, and Special Core Analysis (SCAL) is a plus.
  • Laboratory equipment maintenance experience is a plus.
  • Experience with drilling fluids is a plus.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
  • Candidate must be able to live and work in the United States without sponsorship.
