For over 90 years, Schlumberger has provided oil and gas operators with technological innovations for the recovery of nonrenewable energy sources. As part of our business purpose—to make operations more efficient, lower costs and improve productivity for our customers—we recognize a responsibility and opportunity to continue developing techniques that optimize the use of resources, ensure well integrity and reduce emissions, all of which help reduce the industry’s environmental impact overall.

Our work takes us into communities around the globe. Wherever we live and work, we adhere to our company’s high standards of sustainable practice, and we commit to making a positive social impact, primarily through education.

Community and Education

We believe that empowering the educational advancement of schoolchildren and women makes a powerful contribution to developing economies. Education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is a particular focus.

The Schlumberger Excellence in Education Development (SEED) program for schoolchildren offers workshops and classroom studies focused on robotics, computer science and energy. HSE for Youth prepares students ages seven to 18 to make responsible choices related to health, safety and environment. Our Faculty for the Future program funds women from emerging economies to pursue advanced graduate study.

Faculty for the Future

Faculty for the Future enables women from developing and emerging economies to pursue advanced graduate studies in STEM subjects at top-tier universities around the world. Since its launch in 2004, the program has awarded fellowships to 721 women from 80 countries. Administered by the Schlumberger Foundation, an independent nonprofit entity, the program awarded 38 new fellowships and renewed 93 fellowships in the 2018–2019 academic year. As of 2019, Faculty for the Future fellows pursued doctoral and postdoctoral studies at 280 universities worldwide.

Environment and Climate Change

In 2017, Schlumberger became a partner in the Solar Impulse Foundation’s World Alliance for Efficient Solutions, which has a goal of selecting 1,000 clean, efficient and commercially viable solutions for protecting the environment. Schlumberger scientists are helping to assess proposals, and we aim to contribute through technologies that address biodiversity, water management and CO2 emissions.

Significant investment is being directed across sectors to renewable energies, but these will not be enough to cover the growing energy needs of the planet. By 2040, there will be 9 billion people, and 48% of the energy powering the world will continue to come from oil and gas, even if renewables continue to grow. Schlumberger has the potential to make a big difference by developing technologies that have a reduced impact on the environment and by demonstrating their benefits. Schlumberger works towards this goal with organizations such as IPIECA, the industry’s main communication channel with the United Nations.

As we maintain a focus on our core business, we are carefully analyzing opportunities in the wider energy sector. Being a global steward is about doing the right thing. It is fundamental to who we are, what we do today, and how we will continue to navigate our future.
