Volunteering in our Communities
Discover how Schlumberger employees around the world are involved in sustainability initiatives throughout the communities where we live and work.
Schlumberger’s long-established values have always included a commitment to invest in our people and local communities.
Our employees are involved in a wide variety of community programs worldwide, many of which are coordinated by employees who volunteer their time and expertise at the local level.
In line with this year’s World Environment Day theme, we are proud to share local grassroots as well as company efforts that contribute to restoring our ecosystem. These initiatives demonstrate how the actions of our people have the power to make a meaningful difference for future generations—from planting trees to optimizing facility energy use to educating young people about the environment.
Our Kellyville Learning Center in Oklahoma received a grant from the Monarch Watch organization to create a butterfly habitat on the spacious natural grassland areas at the facility. This installation supports nature’s pollinators, whose habitats in the US and Canada are being threatened.
In Kuwait, our team is reusing and recycling waste material by transforming it into garden products. This has the additional benefit of supporting the communities to grow their own fruit and vegetables. The team are also planting trees and flowers in community gardens.
Focusing on restoration, our teams in Egypt planted more than 2,000 trees across our facilities last year. And, in line with our company goal of reducing carbon emissions, solar panels installed at of the Schlumberger facilities in Egypt now generate a portion of the facility’s electricity.
In April and June, our employee volunteers collected approximately 1,500 kg of waste from a beach in Dakar, Senegal, in collaboration with a local public waste disposal company that recycled the waste.
Our employees in Mexico have been holding online workshops for primary school students in the region to instill the importance of taking individual and community actions towards a sustainable lifestyle focusing on organic gardens, composting, biopesticides, and hydroponics systems. At the end of one workshop in April, students created artwork reflecting their commitment to planet Earth.
Our team in Clamart, France, has found many ways to reimagine, recreate, and restore. In 2018, an apiary was built on our land to support local biodiversity by helping to combat the decline in bee colonies around the world. The apiary is managed by a professional beekeeper and employees, and the honey produced by the bees is shared with employees and visitors.
Since December 2020, Clamart employees have also been recycling plastic caps, which are then upcycled by a third-party company into waste collection containers for cities—the funds from which are used to purchase sport equipment for individuals with disabilities.
Clamart is also home to Celsius Energy, a Schlumberger New Energy venture, which has created a design space that integrates sustainable technology into the urban landscape. This is the first installation of the Celsius geoenergy solution which has resulted in a 60% reduction in energy consumption and 90% reduction in CO2 emissions. at one of our Schlumberger Technology Centers.
Our team in Pune, India, is helping to restore their local ecosystem. Partnering with a local organization , Schlumberger volunteers helped plant 2,000 fruit-bearing trees on farmers’ lands under the rural development program. As part of an ongoing project this year, the team has planted 500 saplings so far in the Barmer region to support green belt development on public land. Additionally, solar panels installed at two of our bases have avoided an estimated 550 metric tons of CO2e so far in 2021, aligned with our company objective to reduce our own environmental footprint.
In Russia, our employee volunteers have been conducting interactive workshops for primary school-aged children of employees and customers in Krasnoyarsk, Moscow, Perm, and Tyumen teaching students how they can better manage waste and water, improve air quality, and understand energy efficiency. Activities included providing SEEDKITs to students who sampled local bodies of water and learned to identify environmental issues.
