Women and Technology 2020 and Beyond

For 25 years, achieving gender balance has been the focus of study, policy and action in Schlumberger, and one thing we’ve learned is the importance of role models in attracting the next generation of talent.

That’s why, in celebration of International Day of Girls and Women in Science and International Women’s Day in February and March, we started showcasing some of the incredible women who work at Schlumberger. Our hope is that these stories from women of diverse cultural, national and educational backgrounds will be inspiring and empowering for other young women who are considering science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. As part of each interview, we asked what advice these employees would offer to other young women embarking on their careers. Here’s a sampling of what they had to say.

“Don’t be afraid. Don’t overthink things. Believe in yourself. Keep learning, and stay humble. Everything you have done before will direct you toward who you are today.” —Hanifati, Laboratory Technician

“Going offshore and sometimes being the only female on a rig can be daunting. However, this is not something I feared; instead, it was a challenge I overcame. The experience has built my confidence and made me stronger as a person.” —Chloe, Field Engineer

“I did not know that I could be so strong. Being the first woman in the maintenance community in Saudi has forced me to take initiative and to be adaptable.” — Rawan, Reliability and Maintenance Engineer

As part of this focus on women and technology, we also launched a podcast series called My Schlumberger Story. Each podcast features Schlumberger women discussing their career journey and their own personal outlook on being a woman in STEM. The full video playlist can be found here.

Meanwhile, we hosted events. Schlumberger Norway held a Women and Technology event at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in March. The students participated in a career talk with our local recruiting manager and a networking dinner. In India, Schlumberger supported the Women in Data Science conference held at the College of Engineering in Pune to inspire students to consider careers as data scientists. We also participated in the International Petroleum Technology Conference Diversity and Inclusion Workshop in Saudi Arabia. The workshop included sessions on best practices in business to foster an inclusive and diverse company culture, and the importance of diversity in driving innovation.

The Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellows and Alumnae Forum was held at the Schlumberger Cambridge Research Centre, Cambridge, UK, where current and past program participants gathered to share their experiences, learn new skills and raise their awareness on the part they play as female leaders and role models. The Faculty for the Future program awards fellowships to women from emerging economies to pursue Ph.D. or Post-doctoral STEM studies at leading universities worldwide.
