Chloe didn’t have to wait long after she joined SLB to experience cross-border adventure. Hired in 2018 as a field engineering trainee right out of Curtin University in Australia, she was sent directly to work within well services in Louisiana, servicing offshore Gulf of Mexico deepwater operations.
She has already chalked up one standout project. It was a coiled tubing job that required the use of high-grade tubing to clean out iron sulfide scale in a high-temperature sub-hydrostatic gas well in a H2S environment. “The design phase of this job involved running simulations and models, string design, fluid compatibility, implementation of preventative and mitigation measures, and ensuring compliance with all company standards in addition to many other tasks." After an extensive and challenging design process, the job was completed successfully with no HSE or service quality incidents.
Chloe was glad to make an important discovery in her first few months: that diversity at SLB is real. Attending training schools in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she met people from all around the world. “Engaging with a multicultural group of like-minded individuals who share a passion for the oil and gas industry is extremely fulfilling and eye-opening. These experiences have given me the opportunity to see and understand the world from different perspectives. Because of SLB, I can now say I have friends in Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Indonesia and across North America.”
Through the whirlwind start to her career, Chloe has collected some important tips for success: “My experience so far has taught me the importance of being versatile. Always strive for excellence. Always question ‘Why’ and keep an open mind about learning new things. The best part about SLB is that the learning never stops!” Of course, the oil and gas industry are still male dominated, says Chloe, who has faced the challenge of sometimes being the only woman on an offshore rig. “It can be daunting. However, this is not something I feared; instead, it was a challenge I overcame. The experience has built my confidence and made me stronger as a person.”
To make the most of working in any industry, Chloe believes in the importance of asking, “What can I offer to the company?”, not “What can this company do for me?”. “This outlook will vastly change your work life experience and motivate you to work hard. Remember, your youth, diversity, enthusiasm and excitement are what you offer when you first enter the workplace, and at SLB, these qualities are highly valued.”
