SPE Distinguished Lecturer
Ilaria De Santo is Reservoir Fluids Geodynamics Advisor as well as Technology and Business Development Manager for Geoservices, the Schlumberger mudlogging division. She joined Schlumberger in 1998.
Ilaria holds a master’s degrees in Geology and Petroleum Engineering, a Global Executive MBA, and degrees in piano and harpsichord. She has co-authored 32 professional society technical papers and five patents. She has been awarded Performed by Schlumberger Gold, CEO and President’s awards, as well as an SPE Formation Evaluation Regional Award (North Sea).
“I believe in the power of integrating downhole and surface fluid analysis. Fluid distribution across reservoirs is often more complex than we think, and its impact on the exploitation of the full production potential of a reservoir can be huge.
Evaluating reservoir fluids is done by using downhole techniques, such as wireline or logging while drilling formation testing, or surface techniques, such as fluid logging from drilling mud. Better yet is a combination of downhole and surface techniques, which allows us to obtain continuous fluid composition by depth, together with pressure, mobility and sophisticated fluid analysis, all while drilling. The combined approach ensures that the optimal well placement is achieved.”
“Since Schlumberger acquired Geoservices in 2010, we have been working very hard to unlock the potential synergies between the sophisticated mudlogging fluid analysis that Geoservices has led for more than 15 years and the reservoir fluid evaluation technologies developed by Schlumberger.
In the past two or three years, these technologies have reached considerable maturity and their integration is proving valuable to customers seeking more cost-effective ways of assessing reservoir fluid distribution and producibility. I am presenting what I consider to be the definitive workflow for making sure that informed and crucial operational decisions are made while drilling to maximize the production potential of each reservoir.”
Geoservices remains the leader of surface fluid logging, while Schlumberger has established the industry standard in downhole fluid analysis and mapping. So, when I was nominated to be an SPE Distinguished Lecturer, this topic was an absolutely natural choice.”
