Career Profiles
Ted W. Mercer II began his career with SLB in 2002 as a project engineer, where his tasks included small subsea hardware projects. He chose SLB because of the opportunities it offered, its innovation, and its diverse work environments. In the 22 years since he joined SLB, whose mission is to reduce carbon emissions while meeting the world’s energy demands, he’s worked in various lead engineer and management roles. “These roles provided me the opportunity to travel the world, and to live in Leeds, England for two years, and helped me continue to have a positive impact on SLB’s technology and performance.”
He completed two summer internships for SLB while he was an undergraduate, working as a field engineer for the second time, and he had work experience at another company after graduating in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He chose that degree because engineering has always been his passion and was a career field within his family, with his father having been an industrial engineer. “I was always fascinated by him and the machinists that worked in the plants to bring products to life,” he remembers.
Mercer is currently a subsea manifold and connection systems engineering manager with OneSubsea, an SLB joint venture with Asker Solutions and Subsea7. “I’m directly responsible for all aspects of the manifold and connection system engineering teams and performance worldwide,” he describes. His tasks include leading, mentoring, and coaching a team of about 300 people, including engineers, and providing quality, cost-effective, and efficient support to teams such as those in product development and manufacturing.
To get to where he is now, he’s had mentors throughout his career. These mentors included SLB’s executive leadership team, and, of course, his dad. Mercer is also an active member of the Black Organization for Leadership and Diversity (BOLD) employee resource group (ERG) at SLB. Its vision includes ensuring equity, fostering transparency, building trust with SLB’s employees of African descent, and offering mental health support and services for those with emotional challenges. He also mentors young engineers in the Houston, TX chapters of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).
At SLB, movement for technical track employees into management is also encouraged and supported. “We offer a diverse range of programs that train, build, and equip employees with the management skills they will need to be successful, including leadership development programs to hone communication, decision-making, and team-building skills, mentorship opportunities, and internal job rotations to give hands-on experience in different areas of the business to broaden perspective and build leadership skills,” Mercer explains.
