Methane is invisible, but its impact is anything but.

As the energy industry works to reduce emissions, finding and addressing methane leaks has become an important part of the challenge. And because emissions can be difficult to see and track, detecting them quickly and understanding where they come from can make a big difference.

For our people, this creates another must-solve challenge: how do you make something invisible visible? And how do you detect it early enough to give colleagues the information they need to act? The answer has brought together expertise across engineering, sensing, data and digital technologies to develop new approaches to methane monitoring.

One of these is the Methane LiDAR Camera, a compact device that uses laser-based technology to continuously scan its surroundings and detect methane emissions. It can identify where emissions are occurring and provide information about their size, shape, emission rate, duration and persistence. By bringing this information together in real time, the technology gives teams a clearer view of what is happening across a facility.

The Methane Point Instrument takes a complementary approach. This compact instrument continuously monitors for methane, using sensing, wind data and analytics to help locate and quantify emissions. Solar power and cellular connectivity allow it to operate independently and send data to the cloud for analysis in real time. It also takes only minutes to install, making it quite literally plug and play.

Behind both technologies are teams working across disciplines and bringing different perspectives to the same challenge. Mechanical engineers think about how equipment can operate reliably in the field. Data specialists work on how emissions can be detected and understood. Digital experts help turn measurements into usable information.

That combination of expertise is what turns ideas into technologies that make an impact.

And at its heart: our people fueled by an innovative spirit that always keeps them curious and wondering how things could be done differently to drive a more balanced industry and future.
